Mechanical keyboards have become incredibly popular throughout the years. More and more people are choosing them yearly over the classic membrane versions mainly because of their higher quality and lasting features. The question we need to ask is simply.
Why are people saying these keyboards are super reliable and are mechanical keyboards worth it in 2026.
What Is a Mechanical Keyboard?
A mechanical keyboard is to put it simply a keyboard with a mechanical switch under each individual key. These are far different from the rubber dome keys or commonly the membrane keyboards. These two separate switches are quite different and unique to each other.
The mechanical keyboard is praised for its reliability and longevity while the membrane keyboard is praised for its cost effectiveness. This matters because if you are a dedicated gamer, coder or writer you will want a mechanical keyboard over a mechanical because of the value for your money you will receive.
Membrane keyboards are usually only beneficial for corporate or office work as they are cost effective for replacements and do the world needed.
Why People Love Mechanical Keyboards
People love mechanical keyboards from things like the typing experience. They are also far more satisfying to type on, and your typing accuracy can be far greater compared to a membrane keyboard.
Mechanical keyboards are also great for gaming as they have faster response or actuation with keypress, they also feel more consistent with every key press and to top it off they usually come with anti-ghosting and N-key rollover.
Mechanical keyboards as stated before have a longer lifespan. They roughly last around 50-100 million keystrokes. Depending on how you treat the keyboard obviously. Compare this to the membrane keyboard which lasts only around 5-10 million keystrokes.
Another great aspect of mechanical keyboards are their customisation features. This can include things like switch changing which can change your key switches between. Linear (red switches), tactile (brown switches) and clicky (blue switches). All have different purposes so make sure to double check which one you are getting before buying. Another is keycaps and RGB features.
Downsides of Mechanical Keyboards
Now while a mechanical keyboard is a great financial choice into investing into because of its reliability and longevity there are some downsides to owning a mechanical keyboard. The first downside is the price of mechanical keyboards. They can range on the high side $200+ and there are solutions such as more budget friendly versions however you lose quality in doing so.
Another issue which mechanical keyboards have are they are far noisier than what membrane keyboards are especially with the clicky blue switches. Alternatives for that would be the red or brown switch however with sound dampeners attached.
Who Should Buy A Mechanical Keyboard?
When considering a mechanical keyboard, you must consider the following. Are you a gamer? if so these keyboards are your best choice in comparison to a membrane keyboard as they have a higher response rate and have zero ghosting problems and are just overall great for gaming.
If you are a writer like me. It is quite pleasant to not have to track back over your writing if you have some spelling errors. These keyboards will virtually solve that not to mention also have a more comfortable typing experience.
Maybe you’re a developer or a student. These are great for typing at high accuracy as mentioned above and if you get a smaller size mechanical keyboard are great for portable usage.
Who Should Stick With a Membrane Keyboard?
Now it is highly recommended to save up for a mechanical keyboard especially if you are one of those things above however I would consider you get a membrane keyboard if you are the following.
On a tight budget where price can be a big factor or just simply want to save up for a high-quality mechanical keyboard which I do recommend.
Maybe you’re a casual user who doesn’t use the computer much or is out most of the time and you only need a keyboard for your basic utilities on a computer.
Note: Ever since I purchased my first mechanical keyboard back in 2016 which was a Razer Blackwidow tournament edition. I have never gone back to a membrane keyboard as these for one suit me best and are just overall far more reliable than membrane.
Summary
In conclusion if you spend several hours a day at your computer or you are simply a gamer, writer, developer or even a student I highly recommend you purchase a mechanical keyboard as it will be a worthwhile investment.
Otherwise, if you are using your PC occasionally and only really need a keyboard for your basic utilities and apps on your computer. A membrane keyboard will do you just fine.
